Zombies And Other Minds Shaun Of The Dead - 1035 Words
Name Student number TA Date Zombies and Other Minds Shaun of the Dead is a humorous take on the zombie movie genre, which presents an interesting thought experiment that challenges our understanding of the mind. In the movie, a character who is a friend of the protagonist, Ed, is bitten by a zombie and subsequently turns into a zombie himself. At the end of the movie, it is revealed that Ed, or ââ¬Å"Zombie Edâ⬠as he is now a zombie and therefore not necessarily the same person, if a person at all, is living in the backyard of the protagonist. If Zombie Ed has no significant amount of mind, is this rational or misplaced sentimentalism on the part of the protagonist? Could Zombie Ed be a different mind, or does he simply not have a mind atâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the case of Zombie Ed, substance dualism could maintain that he doesn t have a mind because the zombification process causes too much damage to the brain for it to work. On the other hand, it could make a plausible case that Zombie Ed is now a different mind; substance dualism must accept that brain states can have a causal influence on the mind (otherwise how do they coordinate to cause behavior?), and a different brain implies at most different brain states entailing a different causal influence on the mind. Identity theory maintains that mental states just are brain states (Lecture notes). There is a correlation between what we perceive mentally and what we can observe neurologically because we are observing mental states when we observe the brain. In the case of Zombie Ed, this theory faces extraordinary difficulty resolving the question either way with satisfaction. Zombie Ed does have a brain, albeit one greatly damaged since Ed underwent zombification; if it accepts that Zombie Ed must have a mind because he has a brain, then how does it discern brains? Our association of mental states with brain states is only because we have mental states, not because we already knew there was something about the brain tha t had an immediate causal influence on the mind somehow (for example, the ancient Egyptians thought the heart was the source of mind). By identity theory we ought to be able to know that

The Demographics Of The U.s. Essay - 1294 Words
The demographics of the U.S. are forever evolving. No generation is like the one before. Trends come and go, ethnic diversity increases, and social norms change. Therefore, as expected, the need and attitude towards particular products changes. There are very few consumer items that are able to withstand the test of time. Those products are typically essential lifestyle or hygiene goods. For example, products like bath soap have been around for years and it is unlikely that the need for them go away anytime soon. With that being said, it does not mean that products like soaps, shampoos, etc. do not need to evolve with the changing desires of our country. They too must also add variety into their product mix, as well as change their methods of marketing to keep up with the times. Letââ¬â¢s now take a look at some demographic trends that will impact how companies market in the U.S. for the years to come. Hispanic Population Growth Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic/racial group in America. In 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that Hispanics make up over 17% of the population and it projects that they will account for nearly 30% of the population by the year 2060. This change will greatly impact what products companies put out on the market, who they market them to, and how they market them. A 2010 report on demographics conducted by the Nielsen Company revealed that Hispanics spend more money on baby items (formula, diapers, etc.). Neo
Neo-Nazis Essay Today there are many active hate groups in the United States such as the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazi, Skinheads, Christian identity, and the Black Separatists. These hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan, which is one of Americas oldest and more feared, use violence and move above the law to promote their causes. Another example is a group called Christian Identity, who promotes a religion that is mainly racist and anti-Semitic. Another group are the Black Separatist groups, they are organizations whose basically are all based on hatred. We know alot about these groups because of the Intelligence Project these are citizens reports, law enforcement agencies, field sources and news reports that make us aware of the racism. Many people know how these groups act and think and most of the American people agree that these hate groups are immoral and should not be allowed to exist neither in the United States nor on the rest of the world. All the hate groups know that they can only flourish if they continue to recruit new members. Three of the most obvious similarities among hate groups members are their sex, male; their race, Caucasian; and their age, 35 years old or younger. Many people think that the reason young people are willing to join hate groups in high school and in college is that they are uncertain about their own futures. People believe that young people who join hate groups are people with the least education and the least hope for the future in their jobs, familys and basically there whole lives. For members of the Ku Klux Klan, their main messages of hatred are toward young people. The education of children and babies has been an important part of the Klan activities. It is so bad and wrong that the Ku Klux Klan has even gone so far as to hang out at playgrounds. They look for little boys who play unsupervised. The Klan believes that these boys are potential members of the Klan because their parents do not care enough to watch them play. They feel the child is probably growing up in a dysfunctional family that gives him no attention and they feel when he is older he will follow the Klan because membership in the group will provide him with a strong family structure that his parents never gave him in his own home. Some people say that children need to feel like they have responsibility, and the hate groups give them this responsibility. They can give them a wide range of duties from simple responsibilities like guarding a door, to big responsibilities like organizing recruitment. When they complete the tasks given to them by the group, they feel like they are needed for the survival of the group, and they have purpose in life. Hate crimes have risen in number during the past five years, and many state governments have tryed to prevent such crimes by passing laws called bias laws. These laws make a crime that is commited by hatred based on the victims race, religion, ethnic background, or sexual orientation a more serious crime than a normal crime. Many people believe that these laws violate the criminals freedom of speech. Many hate group members say that freedom of speech is the right to say or write and even publish someones thoughts, and to express ones self. They also say that this right is guaranteed to all Americans. Some people in organizations who are against these hate groups ask themselves if the first amendment protects all form of expression, like the very serious and hurtful crimes like the burning crosses. The Supreme Court Justices have decided that some kinds of speech are not protected by the Constitution, but the main question still is Does freedom of speech mean freedom to hate? Right no w, there are a lot of hate groups that are printing pamphlets and flyers so they can recruit new members. They are also reaching larger audiences through electronic media, such as internet www.resist.com, television, and radio. The acquisition of knowledge by people depends on their ability to internalize concepts. The origin of knowledge is unknown since most people do not know the true source of the information they have, and that which they disseminate. Over the years, many ideas have been developed to understand what it means to possess knowledge. Research by Cahn describes the differences between assumptions and actual knowledge (74). In the article, Appearance and Reality by Bertrand Russell, he argues that all information known to humans is subject to doubt. He explains further that skepticism yields a closer understanding of various occurrences in life, but not knowledge. Skepticism is the nature of being doubtful of ideas. He tries to show that the daily occurrence and appearance of a setting is unknown. According to the article, the existence of specific items leads to the assumption of their knowledge. He evaluates the concept of skepticism, and its effect on general information. Skepticism gives rise to the assumptions made on a daily basis through doubting the existence of tangible items in a setting. In the article, What Can I Know? by Dewi Zephaniah Phillips, the author argues that in order to have information about an event or occurrence in a setting, extensive research should be done. He shows that people need to have prior information to a case before claiming that they have knowledge. The information should be self-gathered by the person seeks knowledge. To support his argument, he compares religion to philosophy. He questions the existence of God and relates it to philosophy. Russell gives an example of waking up and sitting on a chair and table of specific shape and color. On the table, he sees printed papers and other images. On the other hand, Phillips makes comparison of religion and philosophy. Both arguments have similarities in that; they use philosophy to discard knowledge. They are also similar because they use the occurrence of natural situations to take a stand. While Russell questions the difference in shades of color that affect the appearance of the table and the contents on it, Phillips questions the existence of God. This shows different ways of arguing by both writers, but the perception of knowledge is the same. The two arguments also have differences in relating their positions and challenging assumptions. Russell relates the general color of the table to the changes brought up by the different lighting conditions. This challenges the initial assumption of the color of the table. The explanation describes the different views of how things are perceived. Introducing the concept of lighting to describe the appearance of the table shows doubt. The example of this setting establishes his argument of doubting the existence of knowledge. On the other hand, Phillips dismisses the beliefs of Godââ¬â¢s existence without seeing Him physically. As generations passed, this idea has formed different religions that had various definitions of Godââ¬â¢s existence. Phillip states that people should discover God by themselves. This shows that people need further information in order to acquire knowledge. In support of his claim, he outlines the way he should know all other believers better than his perception of God, to acquire knowledge of his existence. His argument shows the difference between knowledge and belief. The relationship between religion and philosophy shows how assumptions affect the information that people perceive. He also shows the relevance of doing further research in order to convert an assumption to knowledge. Reasons That Make Russell a Skeptic Russell is skeptical due to his confusion because of philosophy. He does not believe in the existence of knowledge because of difficulties in tracing the origin and purpose of matter. His skepticism developed because he lacked valid explanations and proof of the occurrence of general settings. He says that personal ideas originating from the mind without any information elsewhere are most probable. He is also skeptical because he believes that there is a difference between reality and appearances. Therefore, he dismisses philosophy because it does not have conclusive answers to the arguments raised. Works Cited Cahn, Steven M. Exploring Philosophy: An Introductory Anthology. John Hale Vs. John Proctor Essays - Salem Witch Trials, The Crucible
John Hale Vs. John Proctor Essays - Salem Witch Trials, The Crucible John Hale Vs. John Proctor Rev. John Hale vs. John Proctor The characters of John Hale and John Proctor in The Crucible can be compared and contrasted according to their key traits, goals, and tendencies to change. These characters are probably the two most important characters in the play. They both are strong men mentally and are proud of what they accomplish. Reverend John Hale and John Proctor can be compared and contrasted according to their key traits. Reverend Hale is a man in his late forties. He is intelligent and very proud. He believes that he earned his titled as Reverend, the title was not only given to him. John Proctor is a man in his mid-thirties and like Reverend Hale he is proud of what he does. Proctor is also a man who is physically strong since he is always working on his farm. He is a person who does not like hypocrites or frauds. He is also stubborn and not easily led into things. People respect him and fear him as well. These two characters can also be compared according to their goals. Reverend Hales goal is to save the citizens of Salem from being condemned to death and of being accused of witchcraft. If someone is accused, Reverend Hale wants to get that person freed and prevent them from an unnecessary death. John Proctors goal is to first get his wife freed from jail after being accused of witchcraft. He also wants to get Valentin Benitez himself free and wants Hathorne and Danforth to see that there are no witches in Salem and that all the deaths that they have created are unreasonable and irrelevant. They can be further compared and contrasted by their tendencies to change. Reverend Hale usually is a straight faced, stubborn man who stands for what he believes in. At the end of the play he cries as John Proctor is taken off to be hanged before the whole village. John Proctor was also a stubborn man that did not deny what he believed, but at key times in the play he changed what he was saying and fighting for against the court. He first said he did not practice witchcraft and had never seen the Devil, but afterwards he said the opposite. He said that he was an evil person and that he did practice evil acts. In Act Two he also went from saying that he was a good man to finally confessing to being an adulterer and a lecher. The more appealing character was John Proctor because through his stubbornness and inflexibility he was a more interesting character. Proctor was a spontaneous character at times also when he changed his arguments into confessions. Bibliography n/a

Orientation to Biblcal Studies Literature review
Orientation to Biblcal Studies - Literature review Example There is a sense of joy and effort hidden in finding something for ourselves. Thereby the modern academic study of scripture allows an individual a chance to engage with a religious text in a such way that one tends to develop a personal appropriation of the scripture. A systematic modern study of the scripture is pivotal because it happens to be the word of God and contains no fallacy or errors. An academic study of scripture is necessary to quintessentially realize the fact that God is there to take care of this universe and miracles can happen even today as they happened about 2000 years ago in Israel. It is really feasible to go through the scripture without understanding much of it. Even more easy it is to misinterpret the message inherent in the scripture or to interpret a word totally out of context. An academic study of the scripture helps one arrive at the actual and correct understanding of the text in it and places oneââ¬â¢s decision to live by the word and to devote on eââ¬â¢s life to the study of scripture on a sound footing. A religious attending of the mass is not a sure way to receive the innate message of the scripture as there happens to be no preacher incapable of fallacy or not liable to make mistakes. Thereby a modern academic study of the scripture is a more eager and sincere way to receive the message in the scripture. ... However, to be able to accrue a firm judgment in these matters, it is imperative for a believer to personally engage in a systematic study of the scripture and to thoroughly imbibe its content. And when it comes to preachers and teachers who intend to disseminate the good news implicit in the scripture, it is a must for them to have a thorough grounding in the text, so that what they preach to others is immaculately faultless and in consonance with the true message in the scripture. Hence, the study of the scripture is an integral aspect of a believerââ¬â¢s life, and more so for the believers who intend to spread and convey the good news to others. In the contemporary times when it is feasible to engage in an academically sound study of the scripture, and considering the abundance of sources available on the scripture, it behoves any believer to engage in an academically systematic study of the scripture, even if it happens to be of the most basic or simple scope. A modern academi c study of the scripture helps one understand its importance and thereby encourages and motivates one to work hard in construing the message given in it. However, it goes without saying that there are also many pitfalls associated with an academic study of the scripture. One of the essential pitfalls in this context is that a scholar with ample erudition in the academic study of the scripture may lose contact with the actual spirit of the text and in self-conceitedness based on personal scholarship may end up believing the scripture to be a historical or literary text (Gooder 56). It is important to know the scripture, yet, it is even more important for a believer to know the Lord. Hence, while engaged in a systematic study of the scripture it is important for a student not

And also the competition from large scale PR firms that serves nationwide. Analysis of the business performance Performance of a company depends on different factors. To evaluate performance of a company comparatively Porters five forces model gives a large cover up. The task facing managers is to analyze competitive forces in an industrys environment in order to identify the opportunities and threats confronting a company. Michael E.Porter of the Harvard school of business administration has developed a framework that helps managers in this analysis.(Morden ,2007) According to the Porter establishment of many companies pose a threat. Industry of PR is fully filled with thousands of companies , so the buyers can easily move on to other company. As PR is not much capital oriented industry so entry is much easier compare to another industry. so there is high threat of new entrance. Bargaining power of customers is the power customers have to stress up companies in a particular industry. In PR applying this factor is not identical. Some firms highly depend on customers while others neglect that so the bargaining power can be ranked as moderate factor. PR is a industry build with knowledge. It is very hard to find good PR people so they can demand more. There is competitive rivalry among companies in the PR industry because loosing a one customer may cause to lose ten. Value chain analysis contains interlinked activities that finally targeted to achieve customer needs and requirements. In each stage it adds value to the final product. In the industry of PR it targets to grant customer satisfied final product. Activity of the value chain consists which are related to sales, marketing, promotional. As a small business in PR industry it needs to pay attention on that activity. Elements of service represent activities related to after service, assisting, handling complains. As a company in PR industry it is highly connected with those element. Scenario 2 How to overcome weaknesses As pointed out in SWOT analysis there are few weaknesses identified. The less revenue compared to other companies in PR industry is an issue related with the company. To overcome this problem company needs to focus on generating more and more profits. For that they need to target as well as high budget and low budget campaigns. Because sometimes profit margin of low budget is higher than profit margin of high budget. And also they must carry out promotional campaign emphasizing their awards in order to attract more and more valuable customers Strength of a working team is not always depends on count of heads. But in Shine Communications there are only 56 employees in the company. Because they are in PR industry they always have to deal with people who need everything perfectly done. So it is better to hire well selected employees to overcome being inflexible amidst customers. How to maintain and strengthen existing performance Shine Communications operates with core values inside the business that helps to run business functions smoothly. That leads them towards more achievements. In order to maintain performance they need to refresh their ideas continuously. Customers expect different type of outcomes from the company. Shine Communications already having good team spirit and that should be keeping up and strong to maintain performance. Shine Communications reach their customers in different ways and they value their customers. It is better to tie up a knot between customers in a small scale business because one customer means lots. To attain more performance it is required to value people indeed. Performance of a company rather depends on capabilities of the employees of the company. So in order to acquire high performance it is needed to improve performance of individuals. For that employees should be trained, push to gain new knowledge, encourage to learn. Those will definitely leads to improve performance of the company. New area which the business could be expanded It is a way of performing well by entering to a new field of business. As a company in the field of PR the Shine Communications can expand their business operations in to different fields. As per the behavior of the business and the way they conduct their business activities most lead to the sector of marketing research. Marketing research is the function which links the consumers, customers , public and the market through information. Information used to identify define marketing opportunities and problems , generate refines and evaluate marketing action and activities monitored marketing performances and improve understanding of marketing as a process(Macolam,2007). Shine Communications already in the position of understanding behavior of customers and they are deeply study the changes in market as well as every aspect of the society in order to carry out their campaigns. So shine communications has a passion for researching. In a marketing research it is important to measure what we done. Validity refers to the extant to which we captured data and are we measuring what we intended to measure(Naresh,2006) . Shine Communications measure the output of their effort that they achieved the required target. So by using those techniques they will be able to measure the impact and benefits of conducted marketing research to a particular company. Scenario 3 Identify and assess the existing business objectives and plans Objectives of a business define where the business wants to go in future and what we want achieve in a given period of time(Baker, 2008). Shine communications are in a plan of getting more and more closer to their customers in order to deliver standard service to them. As per the Truban(2002) the customer is the person receiving the outcome of the campaign in fact we must look at the deepest level of specific satisfaction. So according to that shine has a plan to customize their distribution channels suit to the present day demand. They are planning to use LIS Shine the mailing list and other social web sites to make aware and advertise what is happening , new posts , new applications for those who are interest. According to the Rothwell(2004) the main objective of staff training and development are to improve the quality of employee for achieve different tasks. Shine is not in strength of allocating time for series of training and development. But they are having a plan to develop s kills of their employees by using twitter and LinkedIn. In that method they are having objective to allow their members to share skills and experience with others over the social media. Revise the existing business plans of the organisation and suggest new business plans As per the Pinson(2004) business plan is extremely important for the success of business and it is main purpose is to give a picture of the future business. Business plan is very much important to have a integrated vision about the company , mutual understanding among the team , recruiting, determine financial requirements and many more things. Shine Communications should focus on raising their profit margin for that they need to develop business plans in order to achieve that task. Also the company must concentrate on recruiting procedure. To build up strengthen high spirit team they must have a good plan for manage human resource. According to the new business era suggested Shine Communications is needed to develop new business plans and objectives in order to capture the market. Business plan is not a fixed written document that cannot be amended according to the changes within the company (Carig,2009). So as the suggested new business field of marketing research they are expected to develop new aims and objectives to the company s business plan. First company needs to develop a methodology to conduct the researches. That means they should experiment on different ways to gather information and measure the result. The best result methodology can be selected. Then the company needs to hire capable human resource to carry out field work as well as indoor work. Then they must develop a business plan to promote new business area to existing customers , new customers and outsiders by social media. à â⬠à â⬠à â⬠Prepare an action plans to implement the suggested changes According to the ideas of Bozeman and Straussman(2003) action planning guide to day today activities in a small scale company. It should be a strategically build up framework that must significantly impact on the business activities. It is important to plan operationally and strategically when a company move to a new business , product or service. As per the ideas of Homburg , Kuester , Krohmer(2009) when preparing a action plan first required to develop statement of what must be achieved. In there it is needed to specify the types of the outputs and results that should come out. Then it is needed to spell out the steps that need to follow in order to achieve the objectives and how it is going to take place. Each and every step of the action plan should be carried out carefully by delegating the responsibilities and power. To determine the best methodology first need to collect information from direct contacts already they have with the company. Then focus on small and medium scale g roups to collect information. Then use shines social media activities in order to gather activities. After collecting enough information it should be processed to select the best methodology. For the selecting appropriate methodology company has to follow above specified steps accordingly by the existing staff in a given timeframe. But for the future tasks the existing staff not be sufficient enough and they are not technically and skillfully ready to carry out the tasks. So the next action should be recruiting research capable human resource to the company. Then they will be able to carry out the next level tasks efficiently and effectively to meet customer requirements Scenario 4 Outline the changes of the organization with the new revised plans The rapid change affects the organization development as well as the organizational environment. The transformation of the organization can be a competitive advantage while it may cause to collapse the entire organization structure (Hudson , 2001). Organizational structure As per the idea of Robbins(2007) structure of organsation reflects the meaning of framework organized on the group who are connected under one roof. It shows the way they are working , power delegation , responsibilities , leadership and how the decisions flow. According to the new plans the organsational structure is liable to change. Because of the new recruitment procedures and new business field new posts are generating , new leaders are emerging . so the existing structure of the organization has to change according to new business plans. Business policies According to the Smith and Fingar(2003) business policy provides guidance to predetermine aims and targets of the company to cover up aspects of structural , functional manner. With the establishment of new business field in a existing company it cause to do changes in the existing business policies. Impact that the proposed changes on business and personnel Small scale enterprises rarely believe in policy changes and business changes. They mostly do changes with the intension of creating better work place and work environment (Obien 2011). In the Shine Communications the changes going to made may occur different impact on both business and personal. By proposed changes the business will get new dimension towards the success. The business will be more profit oriented in a budgeted framework and have to focus on both iconic brands and locally distributed brands. Shines policy changes may lead business to more and more customers locally and nationally. Until new policies and practices become familiar and established organizational performance can be affected according to the changes made. Performance may grow up while employees are confident enough to suit with the new business procedures (Smith and Fingar 2003) With the new business aspect employees should be able to work in each and every department without any hesitation. For that the existing staff need to study the new business area and its operations thoroughly. Because being a small scale company no one can limit only tone field of activities. They are expected to get on the job training by sharing experience among one another. Managers are to use the listening and questioning methodology that transfer employees to correct frame work that leads to target organization objectives in a team spirit (Conaty and Charan ,2011 ). To build up team spirit within the organization there should be a bond between new and existing staff. For that it is required to plan and develop campaigns which allows to join together and share skills and experiences. That changes help to develop employees personally and finally it leads to whole performance of the company. How the changes on business going to manage and measure the performance As per the ideas driven by Pinson(2004) significant changes within a business may cause to change management , production , policy negatively. When applying changes to existing business it is needed to systematically minimize negative effects on the business functions, employees and management. Specially there can be competition among new and existing employees because of the level of skills and experience. A smart competition can be admired but if it is growing up to rivalry it should be attended. Employees with different abilities must be appreciated while giving others a chance to improve their skills. The term diversification is connected with changes of a business function , market , product line . Diversification can bring business towards while much diversification pulling business backward. By adding more business fields to the existing business it may cause complex situation because of too many business functions and activities. But by concentrating on each and every functio n clearly and particularly identifying specific factors the negative impact on business can be reduced. As per the Malhotra(2006) performance of a new plan should measure and report in detail in order to significantly identify. Performane by daily basis Tasks of new plan Task1 Task2 Task3 Task4 Task5 Task6 1 2 3 Total value 4 High performance 3- Average Performance 2-Poor Performance 1-Not performing Conclusion The business environment of small scale business is rather different to large scale business environment. Business functions of a small business is not much complex to understand and also it is easy to measure the performance. The selected company has activated business plans and it can be advanced by applying minor changes. Though it is an small company changes in business policies , business functions and objectives cause large impact on the performance of the company.

A Raisin in the Sun :: Literary Analysis, Lorraine Hansberry
Victor Hugo once said ââ¬Å"There is nothing like dream to create the futureâ⬠. Pathos
ââ¬Å"Emotional appeals (sometimes called appeals to pathos) are powerful tools for influencing what people think and believeâ⬠(Everythingââ¬â¢s an argument 38). There are many methods that can be used to create an emotional connection with people. In the story called ââ¬Å"The F wordâ⬠by Firoozeh Dumas, the author use humor to emotionally connect the readers to her story. In some instances when writers want to get a deeper message across to the audiences they use a sadder approach. In the commercial by AT&T, they try to get the message across texting and driving and the serious consequences.A good method that some authors use to get the attention and achieve a connection with the audience is by using humor. In the story called ââ¬Å"The F Word,â⬠the author, Firoozeh Dumas, talks about her experience growing up in American with an Iranian name that was very difficult for people to say. She goes to talk about how it was more of a struggle fitting in with her na me than anything else. ââ¬Å"All of us immigrants knew that moving to America would be fraught with challenges, but none of us thought that our names would be such an obstacle. (Firoozeh Dumas 751) Being so fed up with the name butchering, she decides to change her name to a much easier American name, Julie. She goes by the name of Julie for a while then decides to go back to Firoozeh. She mentions in the book that after a while she stopped caring about what people call her and responds to just about any name that begins with an F (Firoozeh Dumas 754). Dumas was successful in getting her story across to the readers and many people in this country can relate to this story coming from a different country with a long or difficult name to say.To get a message across or create awareness, some authors and the media like to use more of a deeper more relatable approach, by having people talk about their life experiences, putting up graphic pictures, even show the tragedy that is occurring because of something. In the T. V. ad by AT&T, they raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving. In the commercial, it had one word show up in the beginning that said, ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠and you hear the voice of a girl saying, ââ¬Å"This is the text my sister was reading from me when she crashed her car and died. It was a quick sixteen second commercial, but it was a successful way of using pathos and good message to get across to the audience with a deep emotional connection. This shows that your life can change because of a simple message and affect those who love you. It can be very relatable to those younger drivers and even parents that like to use their cell phones while driving. Pathos is used when writers or even the media want to gain an emotional connection to their audiences and use emotional appeals to influence them. In ââ¬Å"The ââ¬ËFââ¬â¢ Word,â⬠by Firoozeh Dumas, she uses humor to connect her story to her audiences. It was a very relatable story and was a good example of using pathos. Another successful form of pathos was in an advertisement by AT&T about texting and driving. It was a sad form of pathos but it was a good message to get across to the audiences that drive and like to use their cell phones. The use of pathos is widely used to influence and draw an emotional appeal to the readers. Some are successful with it and others fail to gain a connection. The story of Dumas and the advertisement by AT&T were both successful with the use of pathos.

If theyââ¬â¢re okay, then itââ¬â¢s youâ⬠(brainyquote.com). Working as director at the State Mental Hospital in Frankfort am Main, Heinrich Hoffman created stories for his patients to read in his waiting room. The book remains the first to accurately describe ADHD and its symptoms. It makes the childrenââ¬â¢s book an important document of medical history (Thome, Jacobs). Before the late 1800s ADHD was not classified as a mental disorder it was just seen as bad behavior (Thome, Jacobs). In the cautionary tales, Der Stuwwelpeter, Heinrich Hoffman, utilizes characters to symbolize the mental disorders seen in his patients. Heinrich Hoffman was born on June 18, 1809 in in Frankfort Main, very close to the place he would start his psychiatry practice. Dr. Heinrich Hoffman always had a penchant for literatur e and writing but decided to study medicine under the pressure of his father (Thome, Jacobs). After graduating school, he became a general practitioner. He worked at the State Mental Hospital in Frankfort am Main. There he had the many inspirations for his cautionary tales that he would give to his three year old son as a Christmas present. Earthquake Literature Review - 911 Words
Review of Literature Introduction to earthquakes Earthquakes are a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the Earthââ¬â¢s crust or volcanic action. Earthquakes is one of the dangerous and life threatening natural disaster which can come anytime and anywhere on the earth. Earthquakes can cause tsunami, landslides, mudslides, bigger earthquakes, and aftershocks. Earthquake Locations California isnââ¬â¢t the only state with a serious earthquake hazard. There are several lesser-known fault zones lurking in other parts of the country that are just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than the famed San Andreas Fault. Some of these faults are capable of producing quakes bigger than the 1906 San Francisco quake, but because the time between major jolts is longer than in California, many people live near these faults donââ¬â¢t even know they are there. The most and largest active earthquake zone is the Pacific Rim of Fire, also known as Ring of Fire. This is a roughly horse-shaped ring around the entire Pacific basin which is characterised by frequent seismic activity - especially around regions such as California and Japan. V. Seismologist Seismologists is a person who studies earthquakes. Some geologists specialize as geophysicists, who study the physical properties and process of the Earth. India is an area of 3,287,263 square kilometers and a coastline of 7516 km, with the last official census in 2001 showing a population 1. 028 billion people (NIB, 2009). Tamil Nadia covers an area of 130, 0582 SMS and has a coastline f about 1,076 SMS which is about 15% of the coastline of India (Bavarian et al. , 2011). More than 40% of the fisher population lives within 1 km of coast and 50% of them live within 2 km of the coast. The geographical setting of Tamil Nadia makes the state vulnerable to natural disasters such as cyclones (Mascaras and Kumara 2007) floods and earthquake-induced tsunami. About 8% of the state is affected by five to six cyclones every year, of which two to three are severe. Cyclonic activities on the east coast are more severe than on the west coast, and occur mainly be;en April-May and October- November (Supply and Aircraftman, 2009). Floods Floods are high stream flow that overflows the natural banks of the rivers and most of the times become calamitous. India is the most flood affected nation after Bangladesh. Out of total deaths by Floods in the world, (1/5) are from India. The main causes of floods are excessive rains in river catchments, poor natural drainage, Change of river course, Landslide restricting river flow, cyclone and very intense rainfall (Fig. 1). Over that past few years the rise in population is forcing large settlements along the river banks, making the country Thou Education and Research Trust (YEAR) Stephen, 201 2 J. Cad. Indus. Rest. Volvo. 1(2) July 2012 60 policies and measures for various preventions and disaster management activities are properly implemented. From the flood hazard map of India (Fig. 1), it is seen that no area in Tamil Nadia falls in the risk zone. But within a local body area, particularly with reference to an areas proximity to a major drainage system like rivers, canals, and also water bodies like lakes, and further with reference to contour levels/low-lying areas, flood prone area mapping has to be done. Tamil Nadia is also subjected to annual flooding including flash floods, cloudburst floods, monsoon floods of single and multiple events, cyclonic floods, and those due to dam bursts or failure. Every year, on average thousands of people are affected, a few hundred lives are lost, thousands are rendered homeless and several hectares of crops are damaged. Every year, Flooding in India affects Tamil Nadia and the other Indian states of Assam, Briar, West Bengal, Gujarat, Arioso, Utterance, and Maharajahs (Supply and Aircraftman, 2009). Floods are the most frequent and often the most devastating. The cause of flood is mainly the causalities of rainfall in North east monsoon period in the state. Out of the total annual rainfall in the state, 90% is concentrated over short monsoon season of three months. As a result, heavy discharges from the rivers during this period causing widespread floods in the delta regions. Floods occur mainly in the coastal districts basin that carries 100% of the state total river flows (Poniard, 2006). Cyclones Cyclone refers to a whirl in the atmosphere with very strong winds circulating around it in anti-clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Cyclones re intense low pressure areas with pressure increasing outwards. Cyclones can be hazardous as Cyclones are normally associated with strong winds. A storm surge is an abnormal rise of sea level near the coast caused by a Fig. 1. F-loot hazard map of India. Highly vulnerable to Floods. The most vulnerable states of India are Attar Pradesh, Briar, Assam, West Bengal, Gujarat, Arioso, Andorra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharajahs, Punjab and Jam and Kashmir. In 1994, a major flood killed 147 people in Kraal, 138 in Gujarat and marooned 10000 in Madhya Pradesh. In 1995, the states of Attar Pradesh, Harlan and Raunchy Pradesh were severely hit by flood causing huge casualties. In the year 1996, a fierce flood literally paralyzed India, Thousands of people died, got homeless, were marooned in the states of Restaurants, Andorra Pradesh, Jam and Kashmir also affecting many other parts Of the country. In short, nearly every year one or the other part of the country is severely hit by Hoods and creating a shameful history for India. It is high time that the @Youth Education and Research Trust (YEAR) J. Cad. Indus. Rest. Volvo. 1(2) July 2012 61 period (Fig. 2). The coast line starts from Publican along the east coast and extends up to Ruminatively in Sanitarium District and consists of Estuaries of ecological importance, Major and Minor ports, Fishing harbors, Monuments of international heritage, Tourist locations, Pilgrimage centers, etc. Earthquakes Earthquakes are powerful manifestations of sudden releases of strain energy accumulated within the crust and propagated as seismic waves. The need to understand and study the phenomenon of earthquake is for a simple reason, that it is the most disastrous natural calamity for mankind. The Himalayan Frontal arc in India is amongst the most seismically active regions of the world. Even the Peninsular Stretch is extremely susceptible to Earthquakes. The Run of Ketch Earthquake of 1918 is one of the largest interplant events in the world. The first Seismological observatory in India was established in the year 1 898 in the city of Calcutta. Over the years the department has been exponentially expanded by the Meteorological Department of India. Tamil Nadia is not as seismically active as states in the northern and western parts of the country, small to moderate earthquakes have occurred in the state of Tamil Nadia. The frequency of earthquakes is low I. E. The gap between moderate sized events is fairly long. Seismic activity in the recent past has occurred in clusters (Disgusts et al. , 2000) along the borders with Andorra Pradesh, Karakas and Kraal. Ever tropical cyclone; as a result, sea water inundates low lying areas of coastal regions drowning human beings and lives-stock, eroding beaches and embankments, destroying vegetation and reducing soil fertility. Fig. 2. TN: Hazard Map-earthquake, Floods and Cyclone (After Poniard, 2006). Apart from strong winds, cyclones can result in heavy rains causing floods. However, the most destructive factor associated with the cyclones is the storm surge. The worst and the oldest cyclone in India was in 1 737, in Calcutta that took 300000 lives respectively. For cyclone forecast and advance warning, the Government has strengthened the Meteorological Department, by providing Cyclone Surveillance Radars at Calcutta, Prepared, Visitation, Machinations, Madras and Karakul in the east coast and at Cochin, Goat Bombay and Bush in the west coast. As India has a vast coastline Several faults have been identified in this region out of it is extremely vulnerable to cyclone. In India, nearly 150 which many show evidence of movement (Disgusts et million people are prone to natural hazard in coastal l. , 2000) during the Holocene period. The east-west areas (Return, 1995; 1999). Bay of Bengal is one of the trending Caver Fault, Tranquiller- Butchery Fault five cyclone prone areas of the world. The coastal and Vagina River Fault and the north-south trending regions surrounding this bay are frequently affected by Coming-Point Acclaimer Fault and Rationalizations from the sea as well as from the rivers due to Deviant Fault are some of them and run close to tropical cyclones and related storm surges and heavy major urban centers like Combaters, Madeira, rainfall. In Tamil Nadia during he years 1 990 to 1 995, Imagination, Thankful and Butchery. ND 2006 the damages caused Fig. 3. Seismic hazard map of TN (After Amateur Seismic Centre, 2012). To property were worth 5800 million rupees (US$ 170 M) and the loss of human lives were more than 500 (Rammers, 2007). Tamil Nadia lies in the southern part of Indian peninsula and has a long east coast. The east coast is more vulnerable to cyclones and floods. Tamil Nadia has a very long coastline Of about smoke with 591 coastal villages, which is exposed to tropical cyclone arising in the Bay of Bengal and has seasonal character to Tamil Nadia. In 2005, 9 cyclonic storms crossed Tamil Nadia and Andorra coast in a three month 62 the influence of gravity (Noncom et al. , 1972; Barnes, 1978; Hutchinson, 1988; WAP/WILL, 1990; Cruder, 1991; Cruder and Barnes, 1996). In the hilly areas of India, the sliding of huge masses of land has been a common natural disaster causing havoc to life and property. One of the worst and most disastrous landslides has been recorded in the year 1998 in the state of Outranked, when nearly 380 people were killed. As a measure of concern many committees and other measures have been taken to protect from this natural havoc in India. In India, the regions of Himalayas and the Western Ghats are the most vulnerable to these land-slides. Fig. 4. Block diagram of a landslide (Barnes, 1974). However, it must be stated that proximity to faults does not necessarily translate into a higher hazard as compared to areas located further away, as damage from earthquakes depends on numerous factors such as subsurface geology as well as adherence to the building codes. The seismic hazard map of India was updated in 2000 by the Bureau of Indian Standards (IBIS). According to the new map more areas of Tamil Nadia are susceptible to damage from earthquakes than previously thought (Fig. ). The city of Achaean, formerly in Zone II now lies in Zone Ill. Districts in the western part of the state, that lie along the border with Kraal also lie in Zone Ill, along with districts along the border of Andorra Pradesh and a section of the border with Karakas. The maximum intensity expected in these areas would be around MASK VII. The rest of the state lies in Zone II. Since the earthquake database in India is still incomplete, especially with regards to earthquakes prior to the historical period (before 1800 A. D. ), these zones offer a rough guide of the earthquake hazard in any particular region and need to be regularly updated Praiseworthy and Rejuvenated, 201 1 According to GAPS data, the state of Tamil Nadia falls mostly in a region of low seismic hazard with the exception of western border areas that lie in a low to moderate hazard zone. Butchery lies in a low hazard region. As per the 2002 Bureau of Indian Standards (IBIS) map, Tamil Nadia and Butchery fall in Zones II and Ill. Historically, parts of this region have experienced seismic activity in the MM. O range. Tamil Nadia is also prone to very severe damaging earthquakes. Its people feel much more vulnerable to earthquake-induced tsunamis since the 004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which affected the coast of Tamil Nadia destroying much of the marine biology and severely damaging the ecosystem (Government of Tamil Nadia, 2008). Crops, settlements, trees, birds, fishes, wildlife, and properties were destroyed. Precious coral reefs and mangrove areas were crushed by the huge tsunami waves that devastated South India, an environmental and economic setback that could take years to reverse. Power and communications were totally disrupted. The damage to humans, especially women and children, and animal life, was tremendous, resulting in emotional and mental trauma (Kumar et al. 2007). Largest Instrumented Earthquake occurred in Tamil Nadia and Butchery on the 26 September 2001(11. 984 N, 80. 25 E, D=OHIO. O SMS, UTC). A moderate earthquake occurred in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of the union territory of Butchery, on 25 September 2001 at 20:26 PM local time resulting in three deaths and minor damage to property in Butchery and coastal Tamil Nadia. It had a magnitude of Mm=S. 5. Landslides Landslides are mass movement of rocks and debris that usually follow a cyclone, volcano or earthquake under The main causes of landslides are weak, weathered materials, physical repertory variation, Ground uplift, erosion, Earthquake, Volcanic eruptions etc. The general and simple mitigation that are adopted or should be adopted are drainage correction, proper land-utilization, reforestation and spreading Of awareness. Landslides have represented 4. 89% of the total natural disasters that occurred worldwide during the years 1 990 2005 (www. Me-data. Net). Landslide is one of the major natural hazards that are commonly experienced in hilly terrains all over the world. Landslides are affect at least 15 per cent of the land area of India-?an area which exceeds 2 0. 49 million km . In India the incidence of landslides in Himalayas and other hill ranges is an annual and recurring phenomenon. There is a variation in the degree of landslide incidences in various hill ranges (Table 1). Table 1. Incidences of landslides in India. Region Incidences of landslides Himalayas High to very high North eastern Hills High Western Ghats and the Inklings Moderate to high Eastern Ghats and Evangelically Low For example, the landslide incidences are high to very high in Himalayas, high in Northeastern hill ranges, high to moderate in Western Ghats and Inklings and low in the hill ranges of Eastern Ghats and Vanishes. The landslide hazard conation atlas of India published by Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (EMPTY), Government of India reveals that the Inklings district of Tamil Nadia state is one of the severe to very high landslide hazard prone areas Of India. 63 rain at OConnor resulting in washing away of one woman and 2 Children. The rainfall recorded at OConnor and Kodak was 145. 2 mm and 142. 2 mm respectively. On the 19 there was heavy landslide of 1 00 yards in width and about 1. 00 km in length in Sells of Kettle Village of OConnor Talk resulting In filling up of a Valley of 30- 50. The heaviest rainfall of the day was 187. 6 mm at OConnor. On 20. 1 1. 1979 also, there was heavy rain of 102. 2 mm at OConnor and a heavy landslide at Sells in which a house was completely buried in the debris along with 2 women and 3 children. The rainfall recorded on that day at Agitator, Kodak and Kandahar was 90. 4 mm, 99. 8 mm and 78. 0 mm respectively. There was heavy SST rainfall of 71. 0 mm at Devalue on 21 . On 28. 11. 79 also there was heavy rain of 144. 2 mm at OConnor. the 25 October 1990: The North East Monsoon was heavy and there was a cloud burst. More than 35 families were buried alive in a place called Gadded. November 1993: There was another cloud burst on 11 11-1993 in the upper reach of Marmalade of OConnor Talk, about 18 huts situated below the road and washing away OConnor MET Ghats Road for about la km. The Road traffic was suspended for more than a fort night. 12 persons lost their live and 15 persons missing. It is laid that 21 passengers were washed away with two buses. An important highway, sheared stretched of rail road for about 300 m. H 1 1 December 1 998: Due to continuous rain fall, one big boulder weighing about 20 m tones fell on the OConnor Metallurgy main road and the road as closed for traffic, the rock was blasted and earth slips were removed and traffic was resumed from 14. 12. 98. December 2001: Due to continuous rainfall, two massive landslides occurred near puddle on the Counterrevolutionary high way damaging Non bridges resulting in the complete closure of traffic. In addition a closer damage was al so caused to the railway track between OConnor and Metallurgy. Bridge no 55 near hill grove railway station was completely damaged and Bridge No 56 was also damaged. November 2006: Consequent upon continuous heavy rains in the Inkling Hills, numerous landslides were reported to have occurred at the early ours on 14. 11. 2006 killing one and injuring three persons and disrupting traffic in NH 67 and blocking of Mountain Rail track between Metallurgy and OConnor (inklings. Nice. In; Sympathy et al. , 2010). Drought Drought is a temporary aberration unlike aridity, which is a permanent feature of climate. It is a normal, recurrent feature of climate and occurs in all climatic regimes and is usually characterized in terms of its spatial extension, intensity and duration. Conditions of drought appear when the rainfall is deficient in relation to the statistical multi-year average for a region, over an extended erred of a season or year, or even more (Manual for drought management, 2009). There are three types of droughts; Meteorological drought is when the actual rainfall is much less than the climatologically mean of the area. Unprecedented rains triggered about a hundred landslides within an area of 250 sq. SMS in the district during 1978. Nearly 200 landslides were recorded during 1979 and causing loss of life and severe damage to property. Though the Inkling and other mountainous areas are known to be susceptible to landslides, occurrences of such magnitude were unknown earlier. A total of 8 landslides of medium to large size occurred on 14 November, 2006 along NH between Cellar and Pudenda villages and along Mountain Railway track between Dearly and Barbital stations. In the recent times casualties and damage due to landslides have increased in the Inkling Hills. More than 110 landslides were reported within five days from 10 to 15 November, 2009, and taken away about 80 human lives, also the vast damage reported on houses, roads and railway lines. This taught the lesson for the need and urgency of landslide planning in Inklings among the scientific community and planners (Sympathy et al. 2010). Some of the major landslides of Inklings rd 23 October 1865: Worst Storm on record occurred around Toy and OConnor. OConnor Railway station was covered with water up to 5 feet deep. In Toy Lake rose up to top Of willow bound and threatened to breach it. November 1891: Storm caused many landslips on the OConnor Ghats, and did great damage to the Agitator Metaphysical road. December 1 902: Twenty one inches of rain (three times the average amount) fell in that month in OConnor, and at Agitator 24 inches (six times the average amount) was received, of which 8. 45 inches fell in a single night. The OConnor railway was blocked for a month the old and new OConnor railway was blocked for a month the old and new OConnor Ghats roads for nearly as long and all the traffic of the eastern side of the plateau was thrown upon the Agitator Ghats, which was itself in a perilous condition slips having occurred throughout and being serious in six places out of its twenty one miles length. the 4 October 1905: 6. 8 inches of rain fell at OConnor in three hours and the OConnor river and its effluents came down in heavy and sudden floods, the former sweeping right over the parapet of the bridge near the realization. The families of the station staff had to be rescued by breaking open the back windows of their quarters with crowbars. the 5 November 1978: mm of rain was recorded at Toy of which 243 MM was during the night between 5. 00 pm the of 4 and 8. 00 am of 5th. Many people were killed in Toy on account of houses collapses, landslides and drowning. Reports were also received regarding the causalities due to landslides and floods in Kohlrabies; Mitochondria; Dossal and Galatia areas of Dogmatically Talk and Manhattan of OConnor Talk. the November 1979: Heavy rainfall started from 12 November 1 979 and the highest rain fall as 114. Mm at the Kodak. On 13 it was 149. 4 mm at OConnor and 169. 9 the mm at Kodak. On the 15 night heavy landslide had the occurred at Duodecimal, on 16 night there was heavy 64 Fig. 5. Map of drought prone districts of India (Drought prone areas are in red). The country as a whole may have a normal monsoon, but different meteorological districts and sub-divisions can have below normal rainfall. The rainfall categories for smaller areas are defined by their deviation from a meteorological areas normal rainfall (Table 2). Table 2. Rainfall categories. Category Excess Normal Deficient Scanty Deviation 20% or more above aroma 19% above normal-19% below normal 20% below normal-59% below normal 60% or more below normal Meteorological history of droughts in India During 1871-2002, there were 22 major drought years, defined as years with All India Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ASSAM) less than one standard deviation below the mean (I. E. Anomaly below-10%): 1873, 1877, 1899, 1901, 1904, 1905, 1911 , 1918, 1920, 1941, 195 1, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 2002. The frequency of drought has varied over the decades. From 1899 to 1920, there were 7 drought years. The incidence of drought came down teens 1941 and 1 965 when the country witnessed just three drought years. Again, during 1965-87, of the 21 years, 10 were drought years and the increased free ounce was attributed to the El Nine Southern Oscillation (ONES). Among the drought years, the 1 987 drought was one of the worst droughts of the century, with an overall rainfall deficiency of 19%. It affected 59-60% of the crop area and a population of 285 million. In 2002 too, the overall rainfall deficiency for the country as a whole was 19%. Over 300 million people spread over 18 States were affected by drought in varying degrees. Around 150 million cattle were affected due to lack of fodder and water. Food grains production registered the steepest fall of 29 million tones. No other drought in the past had caused reduction in food grain production to this extent (Samara, 2004). Hydrological drought results from the depletion of surface water causing very low stream flow and drying of lakes, rivers and reservoirs and Agricultural drought resulting from depletion of soil moisture resulting in acute crop stress and fall in agricultural productivity. India has been severely affected by droughts over the past years claiming millions of lives. The agriculture in India is totally dependent on rains, which when is not adequate results in poor yielding of crops. This is particularly true of major drought-prone regions such as southern and eastern Maharajahs, northern Karakas, Andorra Pradesh, Arioso, Gujarat, and Restaurants (Fig. 5). In India there is also a history of droughts leading to famines. During the major drought of 2000-2001, a total of eight states had fallen short of crops. Government policies and preventions play the most significant role in coping up with these environmental disasters. Drought is a normal, recurrent feature of climate.
